Avoiding Corporate Blight
We recognize the word ghetto as a slum area in a city. There are white, black, brown, and yellow ghettos all over the world. That is not a debatable point, or the reason for this article. There are many causes for slums, and I want to focus on one of the main causes, and that is abandonment of those who care, and by those that should care. Those that leave felt that they were no longer wanted, and could no longer make a difference. Blight moved in, and more good people moved out. Why does abandonment belong in a leadership blog? It is simple, people leave a; group, city, or company, when leadership stops caring. The great quote by Maya Angelou is a great reminder; “At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”
Show them you care
As a leader, we need to show the team members that you care.
Why do good team members leave?
Is it money or motivation?
Why do they depart, or check out?
What is the main reasons for our other team members voicing that “another good one got away?”.
When all the good ones are gone, what is left to help you get to your dream?
In order to avoid the ghettoization of your company, it is up to you to show those around you that you care. How do you do this? You connect with them, find out what makes them tick, what is important to them. Preaching your dream and your vision is fine. However when your dream gets in front of those that you need, you start to have a problem. Leadership means learning how to get your team to buy into your vision. The connection between their needs and wants must be made in order for yours to be realized. How can you motivate the team to put in a few additional hours this week to meet a project deadline. Not by what it means to you, but what can it mean to them?
How do you make your customers feel?
Have you walked into a company and felt the vibe? You know the one I am talking about. People buzzing around, smiling, focused, yet they look up and ask you how they can help? You have walked through other places, where there is a dull silence, people moving about, but not with a quick step, and you stand there waiting for someone to help direct you. What type of company are you part of? What can you do to be more like the former than the latter? John Maxwell in his book “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect” is quoted “connectors create an experience everyone enjoys”. Are you creating that experience for your team? If you aren’t we can help at Pinnacle Sales. As a certified team member of the John Maxwell Group, we are authorized to train, coach, and mentor on this subject.
