Goal Setting, Targets, Growth Objectives, Meeting a Deadline! Do these terms all sound familiar? As readers of this blog, I know you will be shocked by my following statement. Forget them all.
Well, for now, anyway.
I am going to discuss the power of “ER quickly.” Not emergency rooms, not Emotional something or other, just the simple addition of the er at the end of a word. For example, happy or happiER? Do you want to go from good to great? How about just “goodER”?
I want to give credit where it is due, which belongs to fellow Toastmaster Janelle Reichman. Janelle gave a speech to our group two weeks ago, primarily about happiness. How do you measure whether you are happy? What is it? Isn’t it easier to ask, am I happier? Am I happier today than three years ago?
Power of ER
We can see the same benefit of using the power of ER in other areas. What does it mean to be great? How do I measure it? Should I be disappointed if I am on the right road but not there yet? We can measure that if we focus on getting ‘better’ or ‘gooder,” as I wrote above. We went from 93% on time to 94.5%, our sales have increased by 7.1% YTD, and our profits are improving. We are getting gooder, we are coming closer to the target, and we should celebrate along with the way.
John Maxwell says, “don’t have a goals mentality, have a growth mentality.” If we concentrate our efforts on growth, continuous improvement, and getting better tomorrow, we will most likely meet any set goals, and often we will surpass them.
Where is your ER? What ER can you start working on today or tomorrow to get you on the path of growth and continuous improvement?
