#355: 10 simple ways to add value to your team
Maxwell's Law of Addition sounds great, but how do you execute? Find out in 3 minutes how!
In John Maxwell’s book The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, the fifth law is the Law of Addition. This law states that leaders add value to others and that the accurate measure of a leader is not how many people they lead but how many people they serve. The law of addition is about positively impacting others and helping them reach their full potential.
Throughout the years of teaching this concept, I have found that people struggle to understand how you add value to your team. There are easy ways to identify ways of adding value, like sending someone to training and mentoring them. But there are soft ways to do this every day. Here are ten simple ways to incorporate simple questions or statements into your daily walk around that will help add value to your team.
Telling them, “I believe in you.”
Helps team members feel confident and trusted
Saying, “Thank you.”
Shows that you appreciate them and their hard work and that you noticed
Encouragement: “You’ve got this.”
Encourages them to handle challenges on their own
Asking “What do you need to be successful”?
Show them you are there to help them achieve their goals
Asking them in private, “How are you really doing?”
Show them you care about them, not just their work
What challenges are you facing?
Let them share problems they need help with
Letting them know, “I trust your judgment.”
Let them know you have confidence in them
Asking, “How can I support your growth?”
Shows you’re invested in their career advancement
Questioning them, “What do you think we should do?”
Asking them for their ideas and including them in decision-making processes
Let’s Celebrate!
Recognize their contributions and remind them to enjoy the wins.
Showing interest and appreciation in your team will build that value. It will also help you connect with them more, and as John Maxwell said, “Everyone communicates, but few connect.” Connection is Law #10!
Some people are motivated by a rah-rah speech, but that enthusiasm turns others off. These simple ten steps are safe, and I would have a hard time finding someone who would be turned off or offended by any of these steps.
