#403: Did you miss National Quitting Day?
If you missed it, it’s a good thing. If not, you can still restart and here's how!
The second Friday of January each year is National Quitting Day. No, it’s not about smoking; it’s the day most people give up on their New Year's resolutions. This picture shows the gym on January 2nd: People lined up three deep, waiting in line for a machine.
This is what it looks like by the end of the month. I used to joke that my gym should give me a ‘Buy 11 Get One Free’ deal since I could never get on a machine in January.
Pretty sad. Ten days in and already done.
If you research the top reasons why most people end their pursuit, you’ll read that they set unrealistic goals and didn’t plan properly. Other excuses include lack of motivation, life events, and miscellaneous reasons, but it boils down to the top two. You can stick it out if you set realistic goals and plan for as many contingencies as possible.
I just wrote a few weeks ago that I don’t set New Year’s resolutions, but that doesn’t mean I don’t set goals. When I want to achieve something, I take it seriously and go through a process. There are many processes, from SMART to WIG goal-setting systems, but the most comprehensive and proven method is the Zig Ziglar 7-Step Process. This system takes into account all the reasons people fail. From setting realistic goals to making contingency plans, the Ziglar process will successfully get you to the end.
I’ve avoided quitting my goals early by working the Ziglar system for every goal I want to achieve. As a certified trainer of this method and has presented this workshop hundreds of times, I know it is my way of working. But this blog is about giving you help, so without going through the 90-minute workshop, I’ll tell you one of the secrets to success!
The goal must be meaningful.
Not only does it need to be realistic, but it must also mean something to you if you achieve it. What is the why behind your goal? It can’t be that your Doctor wants you to lose 20 pounds. What would that 20-pound loss mean to you?
As Simon Sinek writes, it starts with why! Why do you want this to happen? The reason must be so compelling and meaningful that you get up and get that walk or run when it’s -3 with the wind chill. For my readers in the warmer climates, what will make you run through the rain?
As I wrote two weeks ago, you don’t have to wait until January 1st to start. However, if you have already quit, nothing stops you from starting again. If you’re having trouble getting started, staying on track, focusing, or any other part of the process, let’s connect. As a certified Ziglar Legacy Trainer, let’s walk through a 1:1 coaching session on how to set goals.
