Are you a lock or a key?
I'll start off 2019 with a quick blog and it is not about New Years Resolutions, or goal setting!
In Seth Godin's recent book "This is Marketing", he speaks of the lock and key concept. Most people market themselves as the key, and they look for a lock that they fit into. Seth comments that we should be looking at the lock, and then craft a key that fits into it.
What does this mean for leadership?
Simply put, we need to connect with our team. Focus on what they need and then craft a solution for them that also benefits the whole. I write about finding "Why" in many of my blogs. Simon Sinek has an entire book about it.
Before you set out your course for this year, ask yourself why. You will be much more successful if you can point to it. If you don't have a why, all the other questions (how much, when) are not so important.
