R&D for Dummies!
My followers will recognize this podcast reference; I seem to get a lot of material from them. AOC – Art of Charm & Jordan Harbinger gave us a great one just last week, Episode 481 he interviewed Cameron Herold. The interview was filled with a lot of great nuggets, and I just want to highlight this one in my blog this week.
R&D, we hear that and we start getting a little worried. That is for nerds right? The geeks that like to tear things apart, come up with new products and innovations. Cameron has a different take on this. R&D is not research and development, it is “rip-off AND duplicate”.
Why does everyone want to continuously re-invent the wheel? When you have any type of problem that you aren’t familiar with, find out if someone has done this before and just duplicate it. Cameron used examples of GE & Starbucks having the best management development systems in the World. If you are looking for a way to develop your management team, go to the Internet, Rip it Off & Duplicate it!
It is okay to be lazy. It is okay to go through the drive through lane, when there is a long-line inside. Why will it mean more if you struggle through something, fail a few times, and then finally succeed? I do agree we learn through failure, but learning something that has been proven by others is still learning.
When you look at your budget this year, set aside enough for R&D. It is time I am speaking about, not money. It is making the same mouse trap that has worked for centuries, instead of spending resources ‘failing’ your way to success. Think of all the time you will save, which means you are on a faster road to success.
