Beyond The Snapshot
#458: Avoiding the Trap of Instant Judgment
“Why are you huffing and puffing like that, Johnny? This is nothing, when I was your age, the snow used to be up to my neck!”
I saw this type of cartoon (recreated with Gemini) in a management textbook years and years ago. I recall it each and every time I see people rush to judgment.
To empathize with a situation, we need to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes. If we weren’t there, we can never assume or say something “should” have happened a certain way. We were not there, living the experience, and not walking in their shoes.
Never “should” on someone!
Keep that in mind whenever you see something in the news, on TV, etc. It is a snapshot in time; you weren’t there, and judgment should always be delayed until you have a bigger picture.
