Trying to remember? Or Trying not to forget?
I can’t forget to pick up my dry cleaning before 3:00pm. I can’t forget to make my dentist appointment. I can’t forget to back up my hard drive. How many times have you asked yourself one of these questions? And for each of these how many times were you successful in remembering, or not forgetting?
Why is this important to you? It’s not your dry cleaning that people are forgetting.
No, it’s not that … but they could be forgetting about you! The memory, and the study of it, is very important to how you market your products and services. We want people to remember our colors, our brand, our slogans and our overall products. If you are a service company, you want people to remember that feeling they had when they utilized your firm. Not just as a memory, but you want them to remember it for the future.
This week’s podcast on “The Art of Charm” featured Carmen Simon, who authored “Impossible to Ignore: Creating Memorable Content to Influence Decisions.” In this book, she talks about many key points that you can utilize in your marketing approach. There are 15 different ways we can utilize to help people remember. Things like repetitiveness, visuals, audio, and so on. Carmen states that an effective campaign should utilize up to 9 of these 15 items over time.
This is a great resource for you if you are building a brand. Being consistent in your message is one thing. But this type of information gives your message a purpose as well.
Building your brand
We are all trying to build a brand. We are not trying to get people to “not forget” us, but we need to concentrate and focus on getting people to remember us … when.
When they are hungry, they go to this restaurant.
When you are looking for a good night sleep in a hotel you go to …
When you concentrate on what triggers your clients into purchasing your products and services, and you market to that positive feeling one gets when they do, you are more likely to be remembered at the right time
How else can we apply things like this? How about building better habits? As I have written in the past, Tom Ziglar is quoted as saying “The fastest way to success, is to replace bad habits with good ones”. If we can concentrate on the ‘reasons’ you are changing those habits, so that you will remember to “drink water when you are thirsty, instead of cola”. If you do so consistently and use the memory tricks found in this book, your path to living a better, more successful life is also possible.
