Focus on getting better, not being good!
I was inspired to write this week’s blog after I listened to this week’s podcast at HBR Idea Cast. It featured Heidi Grant Holverson, the Author of “Nine Things Successful People Do”. The book discusses characteristics common among successful people, and puts a little twist in other often discussed principles.
One of the key elements of success in my opinion is continuous improvement. I speak of that in my book, “PROFITS – Your Seven Letters to Success”, however Ms. Holverson puts a different twist on this concept that I really like. She states that we should just focus on getting better, not being good.
Being good, is what we strive for, but sometimes the leap is just too large and the task is a little overwhelming. I’ve written a blog about that called “eating an elephant one bite at a time”, which is kind of the same thing, however I’ll take this one step further. If we are only focusing on being good, being great might never be achieved! Who says we can’t improve anymore? Just because we have achieved a certain level of being good, we need to truly focus on each and every task that makes it up, and improve on them.
Obviously we have to start any process with the end goal in mind (Steven Covey), but focusing on each step along with way, and making sure we are getting better, will get us to “good” faster.
