How do I get to Someday Isle?
We all know that person. Every time we talk to them, we hear their future dreams. Someday I’ll buy that property. That convertible will be mine someday. If my boss continues to do that someday I’ll just quit and start my own business. Hopefully it’s someone you know, and not yourself. That person is looking to live on “someday isle”. This is a mystical island somewhere in the future, where everyone’s dreams come true. That new job, car, or house. It’s where you’ll find that you are the perfect weight, and you will have the happiest and best relationships. Do you know someone who believes in someday isle? In full disclosure, the “Someday Isle” comes from Brian Tracy in his book “No Excuses!: The Power of Self-Discipline”. It’s a great read on self-discipline, and success. Let me say that I believe in dreaming. Dreaming is healthy and it helps us in defining what we truly do want, that is IF we do something about it. The good part of someday isle is that it’s the beginning of the process. That process is goal setting, and without the dream, the goals are meaningless. What are your dreams? Do you have a someday isle in your mind? If so, Goal Setting is how you achieve this now. Write those dreams down, and develop an action plan on achieving that dream.
Find a System
Whether it’s a John Maxwell or Zig Ziglar Goal setting program or any one of the others that are out there, what matters is that you use a system. We are in the middle of February already, and the national average is that 80% of us, have given up on our New Year’s resolutions for 2017. Why is that? Was it too hard? Or did you set a goal that was unachievable. Getting to Someday Isle is possible. Starting with that dream, now put smaller actionable goals together that will get you there. For example; you want to get that supervisors position someday. What do you need other than experience at the company? Maybe extra training, college, or some certification? If so, enroll in a class! Maybe you need to network a little better with the other side of the lunchroom. How about something radical, like asking for more responsibility to show your initiative? If you are one of the 80% that have given up, are you going to wait until December 31st to start again? Why not re-start now? I love the saying that you don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. Eat this elephant one bite at a time, don’t worry about set-backs, reformulate your plan and keep going. Imagine that you are setting sail from New York. Your destination is London. If you point your ship in the exact direction as London, will you get there? No, you won’t. Your boat may drift a degree or two due to waves, winds, or many other factors. If you never correct your sail from the time you depart, God only knows where you will end up. It is the same with goal setting. You may have started in January, but ran into an obstacle that you didn’t plan for. That is not a stop sign, it is a detour sign. Let your compass and GPS re-route you.
