Eating Elephants
How big are your goals? I listened to a great podcast this week from Zig Ziglar, the world famous sales trainer and motivator. The title of this one was “Happiness as a goal”, and it wasn’t about setting the specific goal of happiness, that was the outcome of the meeting a list of more manageable and quantifiable goals. He reminded the listeners of little things like, improving health, finances, friendships, and the things that “make up happiness”. This is how we set the specific objectives. By hitting and meeting those challenges, the overall goal of happiness can be achieved. You can download these weekly podcasts via iTunes, and the title of the Podcast is; “Inspiring Words of Encouragement” and each week, we get a 7 to 10 minute dose of Zig at his finest. This podcast again reminds me that you can’t eat an elephant all at one sitting, you do it one bite at a time. You need to breakdown your big goals into manageable sizes and realistic bits & bites. If you need 5 sales to make your quota, and you know you need to make 20 demo’s, and you usually set a demo up after 5 calls, you have 100 Calls to make! Understand what all is necessary to meet your goals & objectives. Don’t just look at the signing of the contract as the end goal, make sure you are looking at the total process and setting smaller goals that build up to it. Keep the end goal in mind, but don’t get overwhelmed by its enormity. In math we learn to reduce things to its lowest common denominator, managing your goals uses the same concepts.
