There is sooo much out there! How to pick?
Podcasts, news, blogs, workshops, webinars, and networking - I want to do it all, but how do I fit it all in?
Today’s the day
Distribution Note: We are moving the new blog posts to Tuesday and Friday - Saturday we will still send out the ‘weekend reading’.
You are up and at it. Today’s the day you are going to start working on your goals. As you are getting ready to jump on your treadmill or take the dog for a walk, you ask yourself; “Why not listen to a podcast at the same time, what a great way to use time, right?”
The problem: Which one of the 15 podcasts that I download daily do I listen to? When I am done with that, I know there are 4 webinars all going on at the same time, which one to choose?
It’s great that you are on this path of continuous improvement. Think of it like education. Regardless of your chosen path, you didn’t finish your degree in one semester. Math 115 was Monday and Wednesday from 8-10, and American Lit was Tuesday and Thursday from 11am - 1pm. Treat this content like you did your college education (without the beer and pizza). This will give you an idea what the right mix is for you.
FOMO - Fear of missing out
FOMO is not just the sense that there might be better things that you could be doing at this moment, but it is the feeling that you are missing out on something fundamentally important that others are experiencing right now.
This is a difficult thing to get over. Did you miss something in Tuesday’s webinar on Investing, while you were in the Webinar on communication? You loved Ben Shapiro’s podcast Monday, but didn’t have the time the rest of the week.
One way to help get over this feeling is again to review your goals. Which ones have the highest priority. When you have 2 or more choices, ask the simple question; which one gets me closer to the highest priority goal?
I am a big believer of scheduling and time blocking. If you are trying to get your degree from AU, then treat your schedule like you did in college. Block off time, focus on a subject. Turn off your email while you are working on your budget. And for heaven’s sakes, turn off ALL your notifications from social media!
