Introduction to the Hot & Kole Takes on Leadership
The character of a leader can be caught and taught, these will be examples of those who have succeeded and failed
This will be an intro to the Hot & Kole Takes on Leadership. And the best method for me to explain is through an example.
The Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, trying to blame the previous administration for the train derailment in New Palestine, OH is an excellent example of doing it wrong.
In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins writes about the window and mirror concept. Look out the window and give credit to those responsible for positive outcomes. And correspondingly, look in the mirror and take ownership of adverse outcomes.
Mayor Pete missed this opportunity to show leadership. Whatever happened, happened under his watch. Playing the blame game doesn’t solve the problem that is now on his desk to resolve.
The concept of the window and the mirror is simple to understand but can take time and practice to execute effectively. Fortunately, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to hone your skills. Remember to give credit where credit is due, be accountable for negative outcomes, provide timely and appropriate feedback to underperforming team members, and prepare for and review lucky events. Doing so will help you build trust within your team, build credibility within your organization, and move closer to becoming the leader you want to be.
