Passion: The Holy Grail of what? Work?
You've just listened to the fourth podcast this week that tells you to find your passion. The host promised you that when you find it, you will be happy, and immensely successful. I am here today to call bull crap. Just STOP for Heavens sake. Just STOP, you are wasting your time.
If you want to be happy, successful, and feel like you are adding value, then focus on what you are good at. When you find that, here is the next thing to do ... become better. After you've become better, then concentrate on becoming great. Then the best. And finally, try to be the best ever. I can promise you, that if you focus on becoming great at something, the passion will come. It's pretty hard to be passionate about something we suck at.
The Four Zones of Growth
When you are so good at something, you are in that zone that I wrote about a few weeks ago. This is the Unconsciously Competent Zone. You are a natural. It's when you don't have to think about the next step. The next step just gets completed, or you say the right thing, you write that order or finalize another successful project. Be focused on getting good, then gooder!
The passion comes. Do the work that needs to be done. Bring your passionaite best self to everything you do.
As Zig Ziglar said, "you don't have to be good to start, you have to start to be good".
