Politics 1 - Constitution 0
Putting politics before principles is dangerous, when will enough be enough
A jury voted unanimously to convict former President Trump of felony charges. That is how our system works: Charges are made, a trial occurs, and a verdict is voted on. However, “justice prevailing” means “what is moral, ethical, and legal will always win.” In this case, we aren’t there yet. There will be an appeal, and the verdict we received this week will either be overturned in State or Federal courts. But it will be too late. The goal of this trial was not to put someone in jail but to brand the leading candidate for President of the United States. The branding will now be, at least until November 5th, convicted felon and former president.
Those who know me and have followed my writing over the past fifteen years may recall that I did not vote for Trump in either election. I am fiscally conservative, socially libertarian-minded, and registered as an independent. I often boast that I have never voted for a winner in any Presidential election. So why do I care about this? My primary filter is freedom; our Constitution is the only tool to ensure this. Our Constitution lost this week, and with it our feeling of freedom.
Is it conspiratorial to say things like, if they can do this to him, they can come after me?
Lavrentiy Beria said “Find me the man and I'll find you the crime.”
I am not a lawyer, so I will not get into the details and nuances of the case. However, we know one thing for sure: the DA who brought these charges campaigned for office by saying he would put Trump behind bars for something. He didn’t know what, but he would find a crime and convict him because he dared to do so. Is this moral and ethical? Is this how justice is supposed to work?
When your government is so strong that it can manipulate laws, judges, and the media, you need to be worried. Yes, it may be legal, but let us remember the same government abusing its powers, and also writing the laws that make it legal.
I don’t care which side of the aisle you are on. If you aren’t worried about the abuses of power we see from our government, you should be. We need to do more than observe what is happening in this country. We must participate at every level and stop leaving it up to someone else to fix. We may feel comfortable in our lovely suburban homes because we have everything we need, and these problems are not impacting us. But remember again, if they can do this to a former president, you have absolutely no chance at all if they come gunning for you.
How many more pillars of this great republic must fall before you say something? Opinion polls show that we have lost faith in our elected officials, the FBI, DOJ, Education, and our health system. We have stopped believing our experts because they have put politics before principles.
We haven’t lost the war, but we are losing battles. It is time to be part of the solution and bring common sense and our Constitution back into focus.
First they came for the socialist, but I did not speak out, because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the unionists, I did not speak out, for I was not a unionist. Then they came for the Jews, I did not speak out, for I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me. Martin Niemoller
