Tips: Improve Clarity in your Life!
1 + 1 = 2
Some things are just so simple. They come to you with clarity, and you can apply it immediately. I found that in this week’s “Art of Charm” Podcast, hosted by Jordan Harbinger. Jordan’s guest was Rob Scott, who defines himself as an “Identity Shifting Mastermind”. I almost didn’t listen to the podcast based on the title, but it was definitely worth the time.
You need to listen to the entire episode for more definition, but in short, the message is that we all have lenses that we see our lives through. We’ve all heard that we build walls for defense mechanisms, but Rob takes a different take on this. Instead of walls, he uses lenses as the metaphor. We can see thru these lenses, but the definition of a lens is what has the meaning here … “a device that you look through, that distorts and/or modifies and object”. When we look through a telescope it actually distorts the image so we can see it more clearly. When I look through my reading glasses, it takes my natural vision and distorts the text I am reading so I can actually make out each letter instead of a blur.
In our lives, our lenses are truths, opinions, or beliefs. 1 + 1 will always equal 2, that is a truth. My wife’s meatloaf is the best I have ever tasted, is an opinion. If I am willing to fight you over whether or not my wife or yours has a better tasting meatloaf, it becomes a belief.
Belief is not fact
I will quote Rob here; “A belief is an opinion, which we defend as a truth”. When I heard this I thought it was profound. Think about what you believe today. I am not talking about religion, but in your day-to-day lives. We base our lives on our beliefs, but we should be taking a hard look at them to make sure they are truths or opinions. If you truly believe your boss doesn’t like you, and you are going to lose your job, is it based on truth? Or is this just your opinion? If this is only your opinion, you could sub-consciously start acting out in a way that will truly get your boss upset. If you believe that you are not going to ever live in that nice part of town, or you will never make that type of money, your actions and attitude will be modified to meet your beliefs.
As we go into 2016, think about those key words – “TRUTH, OPINION, and BELIEFS” … Teddy Roosevelt coined the phrase; “If you believe you can, you are halfway there”. Henry Ford said; “If you believe you can, or believe you can’t, you are right”.
If belief is so strong, make sure it really is the truth, then make it happen.
Happy New Year!
