Leadership Example of the Week
The terrible story about the hostage situation in Texas last week is our example of the week. Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker is our clear winner. Not only because he saved his fellow hostages, but because he had the foresight to enlist in several security training courses over the years, that is the reason he is the example of the week.
What are you doing today to prepare for the future? Whether it is positive or negative?
“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” - John C. Maxwell
Why Read Leadership Blogs:
There are a number of ways reading leadership blogs can make you a better leader, including:
Introducing you to new ideas. Part of being an effective leader is being open to new ideas and ways of doing things. Reading leadership blogs can give you different perspectives, help you expand your mindset, and find new ideas to explore and implement within your business.
Helping you avoid mistakes. Getting insights into other leaders’ mistakes can help you avoid the same pitfalls in your own business—and leadership blogs are a great place to get advice on what not to do straight from leaders who have already been there.
Challenging you. Often, the content in leadership blogs will challenge you to examine your actions in a new or different way—and while that challenge might feel uncomfortable, it can ultimately help you grow.
We will be showcasing some of the best ones out there over the next few weekends. Let me know which ones you like !!
1. Michael Hyatt
Consistently ranked one of the most influential leadership authors around, Michael Hyatt has been featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, CNN and The New York Times. Hyatt updates his blog consistently each week with brief (but insightful!) posts on a variety of leadership topics, including productivity, influence, collaboration and personal development. Where are you spending your time? One of my favorite stories about where to invest your time. This blog is 8 years old, but the story is over 130 years old and still lives true today!
This is a story I heard Zig Ziglar tell in person in the 1980’s. I am reliving some of my Ziglar moments this week (you’ll see why in the next clip)
If you are not investing your time in the right things, who are you stealing from?
Today's blog is a story that I love. I've heard it from numerous people, but the one that tells it the best, is my favorite story-teller, Zig Ziglar. Zig Ziglar tells the story of Emmanuel Ninger.
In 1887, Ninger walked into the local grocery store to buy turnip greens. He gave the clerk a twenty-dollar bill, but as she put the money in the cash drawer, she noticed ink from the bill had stained her hands, which were damp from handling the turnip greens. The clerk has known Mr. Ninger for years. He can’t be a counterfeiter! But, finally, she goes to report the incident to the police, who confirm that the twenty-dollar bill is a counterfeit.
With a search warrant in hand, the police search Mr. Ninger’s home. In the attic they find the room where he is counterfeiting money. Emanuel Ninger is a master artist and he was reproducing money with paint and brush.
The police also found three portraits that Ninger had painted and confiscated them. These later sold at auction for $16,000 (in 1887 currency).
The irony is that Ninger spent as much time counterfeiting a twenty-dollar bill as it took to paint a portrait that would sell for over $5000. Emanuel Ninger was a thief, but the person he stole from was himself!
Your task this weekend is to think about where you invest your time. Then question yourself
Are you painting $20 bills?
Or are you working on $5,000 portraits?
Goal Setting & Achievement
I am fortunate to have gone through the Ziglar Legacy Training program, and facilitated a workshop on Goal Setting this week. It gives me an excuse to show one of my favorite videos with Zig Ziglar - 5 minutes
