What will you compare 2016 to?
Week 51 … almost at the end of what has been a very interesting 2016. If you are lucky and not living in the retail world your business year is winding down. Like most of you, I use this time to accomplish two things; the first being to compare my situation to last year, and the other is to determine where I want to be the same time next year. Notice that I didn’t say I that I am going to benchmark my competition, or determine how far they have moved along since last year. Why is that? Because to compare is to despair. There will always be people doing better than you, and there will always be others that have not kept up your pace. If you choose the wrong person to compare to, you will either put yourself on a pedestal that is not realistic, or think you haven’t gone far enough. In the end, you will still be in the exact same place.
“The only person you should be comparing yourself to is you, yesterday”.
As a Leader or Manager, you shouldn’t be comparing your team to anyone else either. How did Joe do from last quarter to this quarter? Did he meet his goals? Will he meet his expectations? Did you do everything you can to help him out? Could you have been a better mentor or coach? John Maxwell says that you need to define success on your own terms. What will make you successful? What will make you happy? If having more than the other guy or your neighbor is something you are chasing, what happens when a new neighbor moves in and he has more than you? It’s a race you can’t win. As you reflect on your growth path this past 52 weeks, check one thing … did you grow? Or did you shrink? The wheel of life includes your; physical well-being, career, financial status, personal issues, your mentality, family, and spirituality. How did you grow in each of those areas? Are you leading a life of significance? Pinnacle Sales offers coaching and training on this specific topic. In 2017 we will be rolling out our first Mastermind Group focusing on this wheel. This is a Ziglar Coaching Platform referred to as Live-to-Win. If you are interested, send me an email to: mkole@pinnaclesales-llc.com to get additional information. As weeks 51 and 52 roll by, take the time to reflect on your path.
May you all have a Blessed & Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
